As parents prepare kids to go back to school, much of Australia is set to swelter through record heat. The following spokespeople including doctors, heat experts, vets and parents are available to comment on the extreme heat, vulnerable communities, as well as practical tips for staying safe.
DOCTORS ON HEALTH IMPACTS - Dr Kate Wylie, Doctors for the Environment Australia executive director and GP, can speak about the physical and mental health impacts of extreme weather and climate change. Dr Wylie can share practical tips for staying safe during a heatwave and the impact of continuing extreme weather on mental and physical health. Location: Adelaide, SA
PETS AND LIVESTOCK SAFETY - Dr Elise Anderson, member of Vets for Climate Action, is a rural vet in Alexandra, Victoria. She can speak to heat impacts on livestock and pets. Having worked most of her life in rural and regional communities, she has experienced first hand the threat that climate change poses to the animals and people in these areas. BACK TO SCHOOL - Nic Seton, CEO of Parents for Climate, can talk about the impact extreme heat made worse by climate pollution is having on families during summer months, including impacts on kids health and education outcomes, unplanned school and early childhood centre closures as some states prepare to go back to school. HOT WEATHER IN CITIES AND TOWNS - Emma Bacon, Executive Director and Founder of Sweltering Cities, works directly with communities in Australia’s hottest suburbs, including the likes of Western Sydney, and Dandenong in South Eastern Melbourne and can talk about how to prepare and can provide insights and solutions on how best to prepare cities.
