Bankstown early learning service shut down immediately due to safety concerns

NSW Early Learning Commission 2 mins read

The NSW Early Learning Commission has moved to immediately suspend Sunshine Kiddies Early Learning Centre in Bankstown due to serious non-compliance and safety concerns, requiring them to immediately stop delivering education and care.

The Commission, which regulates early learning in NSW, has been investigating serious breaches at Sunshine Kiddies Early Learning Centre as part of its role to ensure approved providers meet their obligations to deliver safe, high quality early education for children.

Key concerns behind the immediate suspension include the inadequate supervision of children, failure to maintain educator-to-child ratios and failing to report child protection concerns. The service also exposed children to harm and hazards, including leaving young children in a room without air conditioning during hot weather.

The service approval for Sunshine Kiddies Early Learning Centre has been immediately suspended for a period of 6 months effective from Wednesday 11 February.

The investigation is ongoing and the Commission may issue further compliance actions.

Last week the Commission announced it had cancelled two services and suspended another following concerns over child safety. An out of school hours preschool service operated by Lycee Condorcet International French School, Great Western Family Day Care and Fairytales Preschool and Long Day Care Centre in Carlingford were all subject to regulatory action.

The Commission’s Information and Enquiries team are available to support families that may be experiencing difficulties in finding alternate education and care. Our team can be contacted on 1800 619 113 or via email information@earlylearningcommission.nsw.gov.au from Monday – Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Please attribute to the NSW Early Learning Acting Commissioner Daryl Currie:

“Children’s safety must be the paramount consideration for the Commission, approved providers, services and everyone involved in the sector.

“While we understand the impact service closures have on families, we will not hesitate to take decisive action when children’s safety is at risk.

“We will continue our investigation, and this service will not reopen its doors to families unless all safety and quality concerns have been addressed.”
