Myuna workers continue fight to save jobs, keep mine open

Mining and Energy Union < 1 min read

Myuna workers are disappointed that Origin has put forward a disingenuous offer for coal supply to Eraring Power Station that won’t keep the mine open, unions said today.

Myuna operator Centennial has confirmed that Origin’s 12-month coal supply offer announced today wouldn’t cover costs or stem significant losses from the mine.

ALERT: Unions will hold a rally at Eraring Power Station on Wednesday – details below.

“Origin are trying to pull a swifty by making an offer that doesn’t cover costs or ensure the mine can operate for the life of the power station, until 2029,” said Mining and Energy Union Northern Mining and NSW Energy District President Robin Williams.

“Until there’s a fair deal to keep the mine operating, workers will keep fighting for the 300 coal mining jobs at risk and all the local families and businesses that rely on Myuna.

“These workers deserve the fair and orderly transition they keep being promised – not to be thrown on the scrapheap by a corporate Goliath like Origin.”

Myuna unions the MEU, Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, Electrical Trades Union and Collieries Staff and Officials Association will push ahead with a week of action to secure Myuna and the jobs it supports – including local letterboxing and doorknocking, a rally on Wednesday and a family fun day on Sunday.

The unions plan to continue escalating community and public pressure until Origin agrees to a coal supply deal that protects the 300 jobs on the line.
