Doctors will appear tomorrow morning at the New South Wales parliamentary inquiry into clean indoor air to discuss the dangers of indoor air pollution.
Australia currently has no indoor air quality standards, but the development of such standards would improve the quality of the air we breathe inside.
Poor indoor air quality impacts us all, as we spend most of our time indoors. It especially affects children, who spend a large amount of time in classrooms, those who are pregnant, older people and those with existing heart, lung or immune system conditions, as well as those in lower socioeconomic groups or in workplaces where fossil fuels are burnt.
There are multiple sources of pollutants in modern buildings, including those from
cooking and heating with fossil gas or solid fuels such as wood and from volatile organic compounds in furnishings and paint.
However, measures to improve indoor air quality, such as improved ventilation and eliminating the main sources of pollutants, will benefit everyone.
